10 ways to avoid virus on your computer

Written on October 20, 2008 by ziazan

Everyday thousands of new computer viruses is being made. You end up struggling how to get rid of the unwanted parasite and how to clean up the mess. Here is a list that will help you to avoid them in the first place.

  1. Install and use a good anti-virus program. I suggest AVG Free or Avast Free. Make sure you update your anti virus on a regular basis. Most anti virus solutions today does this automatically, but make sure once in a while that yours is up to date.
  2. Never open an attachment in an e-mail that either didn’t expect or don’t know what is. Same for messengers. If someone is starting to send you files without informing you first, confirm it from sender before accepting the transfer. Under no circumstances accept files with extensions .vbs
  3. Pirated software may contain virus and trojan’s.
  4. Don’t use CD’s or DVD’ if you don’t know the content or who is responsible for the content.
  5. Make sure you scan all downloads of free software and e-mails you receive.
  6. Keep your OS updated at any time with the newest patches and security updates.
  7. If you are using Internet Explorer, change to a safer web browser like Firefox or Opera. They are both free to download.
  8. Avoid using administrator as a daily basis user.
  9. Install a firewall or use Windows firewall to avoid worms spreading to your computer.
  10. Bank Scams: Ignore emails from banks, unless you have explicitly asked the bank to communicate with you via e-mail. Even if you have explicitly asked a bank to communicate with you via e-mail, be cautious if you choose to enter your account details such as your BSB number, account number or pin into a website supplied via e-mail, as it may be forged. Never follow a link to your bank via an email, but type it in yourself in the browser. This because the link in the email can link you to another website that you don’t know.

Even though you take all measurements to avoid virus, you still should take backup of all your important files on a regular basis. Because when you first have a virus in your computer, it may also be in your personal documents.
